From a young age, Amy Maddox had always suffered with hearing difficulties. In 2018, she had bilateral tumours removed from her ears, worsening her condition and leaving her wearing hearing aids. This left her with a passion to help those in her local community who may be suffering with similar conditions and symptoms. Ear wax is the leading cause of hearing loss and has been linked to diseases such as dementia, making Amy’s work more important than ever.
Armed with 10 years’ experience in the NHS and an eagerness to make a difference, Amy founded Medicure Hearing, an ear wax removal company for those in the Liverpool City Region. Based in Tuebrook, Liverpool, her services are affordable, accessible, and Amy is proud to say her USP is her “empathetic approach” towards her patients.
She approached The Women’s Organisation for start up business support and to help with her confidence and her knowledge on taxes, finances, and bookkeeping. Through our Enterprise Hub programme, Amy went full time with Medicure Hearing in 2023 and is already going from strength to strength. Within the first few months, she had been contacted by a world renown company asking to provide services to their staff, opening her to a new audience.
How did The Women’s Organisation help?
Amy was paired with one of our business advisors, Paul, and attended several workshops to help with her professional development.
“Since starting my business, there were a lot of areas I was unsure about, particularly setting up as a limited company. The Women’s Organisation have given me guidance on all of that plus the confidence and new ideas to help me grow my business. Also, any questions I have had, have been answered and my advisor has always been there to help me when needed.
I’ve had really good feedback from the patients which makes me very proud and has grown my confidence. I am also excited for the future and how much further I can grow my business.”
If a friend of yours was looking to set up their own business, based on your experiences and the things you have learned, what advice would you give them?
“I would say 100% go for it. You don’t have to know everything; you just need to find people who do (like the Women’s Organisation!). Don’t wait, go for it, and learn as you go along.”
